The joyous surge of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos, the idiosyncratic songs of Hoagy
Carmichael, and the taut, driven layers of Californian composer Terry Riley….here is
music full of glorious contrasts. Richard Alston’s OVERDRIVE takes up the pulsating rhythm of Californian composer Terry Riley’s music and runs with it to the wire – shifting, changing direction, curving over and under but never pausing for breath. SHUFFLE IT RIGHT is a light and good humoured company piece syncopating to the jazzy songs of Hoagy Carmichael, who himself sings and plays piano on these wartime recordings, which include Stardust, of course, and Ol’ Man Harlem and Riverboat Shuffle. Martin Lawrance’s TO DANCE AND SKYLARK is a celebration of Bach’s vigorous and colourful
Brandenburg concertos. Lawrance’s steps pick up on all the elation of this wonderful
music.
